A Strengths-Based Approach

  • A strengths-based approach focuses on maximizing what’s great about people and their unique talents versus their deficits. It’s about helping people identify the distinctive contributions they make to a team. It’s about intentional development of these talents to better understand themselves, each other, and how they can best apply these tools in their professional and personal lives. As a manager, it’s also about how to understand the talents and perspective you bring to your leadership role and how you can best tailor your approach to the talents of your team.

To get started, individuals complete the CliftonStrengths assessment. The assessment measures your talents - your natural patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving - and categorizes them into the 34 CliftonStrengths themes. Then the fun begins! By focusing on the strongest CliftonStrengths themes of talent, individuals are able to better articulate why they do what they do, enhance their own self-awareness, better manage potential weaknesses, and understand what makes them stand out.

  • Using a strengths-based approach in your management style and with your team not only promotes a more positive work environment but also helps you get the best out of each of your team members. It allows team members to see how they fit in the team. It provides a common language for team members to best understand each other and how we approach everyday interactions like decision making, communication, conflict, and project planning. In fact, according to Gallup, people who use their strengths every day are three times more likely to report having an excellent quality of life, six times more likely to be engaged at work, 8% more productive, and 15% less likely to quit their jobs. So it’s worth it!

  • As a Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach, I use the lens of a strengths-based approach in all of my programs. In New Manager Essentials we will focus on understanding the talents and strengths you bring to your role as a leader and how this influences your approach with your team.

In Discover Your Team Talents, I introduce your team to the strengths-based approach and then curate a selection of activities that focus on their own self-awareness, understanding of each other’s talents, and how everyone’s talents impact the team as a whole.

In the Strengths-Based Team Bundle we go all in! Together we build a long-term plan to infuse a strengths-based culture with your team. Through a variety of mediums including workshops, team activities, conversation starters, and more - we develop a program that keeps growing the conversation, learning, and development of your team.

  • While I began my work with CliftonStrengths over 16 years ago, becoming a certified coach allowed me to deepen my understanding, appreciation, and practice of this philosophy. For you, this means I will not only share my expertise with you and your team, but I bring depth in designing practical applications to a strengths-based practice for you and your team.
